Final meeting: Tuesday 27th April 1824
The Essex hamlet of Burton Wells, famous for its Hunt Group, diversified from hunting by organising their own race meetings in the early 19th century. The inaugural meeting was staged on Wednesday 21st June 1820 at Bull Marsh Meadows when the opening Sweepstakes was won by Captain Hallett’s Fortunio, beating Amelia and Barbarossa. The later Burton Stakes went to Captain Shelton’s Culprit who got the better of Ariel and Diamond Ace. The meeting was well supported and a further meeting took place on Tuesday 30th April 1822 when the Farmers’ Plate went to Mr Goodchild’s brown horse Buckle, while the feature Burton Hunt Stakes saw Fame beat Susan and Frolic. The final meeting was staged on Tuesday 27th April 1824 when the Hunters Plate over 3 miles was won by Captain Pritchard’s Merry Andrew. |
